Dongchuan Red Land is located in the northeast of Kunming. The distance is about 250 kilometers from Kunming to here. The altitude of the main attractions are between 1800m and 2600m above seal level. There are three major scenic routes — the northwest line, the northeast line and the south line; among of which the longest scenic route is about 45 kilometers from Shuipingzi Terraced field to Damakan

Dongchuan is warm and humid. Red soil developed under high temperature and rain; This kind of soil contains more components of iron and aluminum, less organic matter, strong acidity and sticky. Iron in the soil is slowly deposited through oxidation and gradually forms dazzling color. Seen from afar, the land is colorful, and this special red land with a radius of nearly a hundred miles.

The scenery on the red land is different in different season. When spring comes, the big and small hills are full of yellow rapeseed flowers and Yunnan-specific white rapeseed flowers; white and yellow flowers are interwoven with different red soils to form a huge picture. In Summer, potato blossoms, Wheat mature. In Autumn, Golden is the color of the wheat fields that rolled like waves across the high and low hills stretching out. After the harvest, part of the red land is being ploughed waiting to be planted,another parts of the red land has been planted with green barley or wheat. According to locals, the most beautiful moment of this red land is after rain, as the land drenched in rain is even more plump with its color under the sun. After heavy rain, the clouds parts away, ones see the sun which rides high in the sky. the sky is bluer and even more appealing. The clouds change different shapes which keep changing the light and shadow that shine on the red land. If you may lucky, you can also see the rainbow connecting with the red earth.

Following the footsteps of local farmers is one way to feel this red land, they are the masters here, and also the most vivid and natural scenery. Under the blue sky, on red land, the famers go out to work early in the morning and returning home late in the evening with their cattles. Sometimes their children are also in the field following their parents doing what they can

Tips on visit

In General there are two bus stations you can use to take bus to Dongchuan Red Land
-1), Go to Kunming Beibu Bus station, to take bus to “Fa-Zhe”, get off the bus at Hua Shi Tou village Stop (花石头村), the bus fee is about RMB 37 per tickets; two buses a day with departure at 07:50 am and 08:30 am;
-2), Go to Dongchuan Bus Station to take the bus to Ma Street, get off the bus at Hua Shi Tou village Stop (花石头村), the bus fee is about RMB 18 per tickets;

In addition by public bus, you may choose to take a taxi to Dongchuan red land from Kunming, which cost 1000 – 1200 rmb per trip
